My Backyard Tomatoes

Image
I cook. This is not news if you know me well. Anyway, that is besides the point. Sometime back, I went outside the kitchen to pour away some dirty water and I found this beauty sitting pretty just outside the kitchen. It occurred to me that it must have grown out of the kind of water I was about to throw away again. I remembered how annoyed my dad was when the land he paid for to be cemented began to crack. The portion behind the kitchen is gradually becoming sand again. I also remembered one of our Bible study sessions where Bro Tayo emphasized on how God can teach you a lesson through something as regular as a light bulb.  So here are the seven lessons I learnt from my backyard tomatoes. 1. Effort is not always equal to results: I put zero effort into planting these tomatoes. In fact, I do not remember planting them at all. As a matter of fact, the ones I deliberately planted did not grow. 2. Expectations hurt: The tomatoes I planted hurt my feelings. I nurtured them so well so I...

Ìyá Òde Ajé

The first place I came to the consciousness of gender roles was not in the home front. It was in school. Imagine my shock when Akinwande tried to "relegate" and bully girls in P1 Bolarinwa. I was shocked. I got home that day, fortunately, Ìyá Òde Ajé came visiting and asked why "Okoro was frowning again". I told her there was a new boy in my class who not only made girls serve lunch, but also made sure we had smaller portions and made sure we used "jákajàka" plate. Ìyá then told me pé "Àparò kan ò ga jù'kan lọ". Now that I think of it, I know where my love for proverbs stemmed from (I can barely say five sentences without chipping in one or two òwe). She tried to explain to me how she trained all her kids the same way. That she feels ANY individual should be able to live independently and not be a burden to any other person in whichever department. I guess that's why my Dad, Uncles and Aunties can do all the "male and female chores...

Frudi!!

Ever heard of the word serendipity? Ever had a serendipitous experience? I had my umpteenth one yesterday at @grandexmallibadan and brethren, I don't think I have ever been this excited to share any information. So after a very busy day at one of my jobs yesterday, I decided to go window shopping at the new @grandexplus outlet at the @grandexmallibadan. I must tell you that that place is a haven of sweet things. Lots and lots of goodies and gift items. Anyway, I digress. I saw a rack filled with a particular fruit juice range and what attracted me was the pack, then the name, and then the uncommon flavours so I decided to pick a pack. That was where I had a lil issue. They all looked so enticing cos they are all rare juice flavours. In short, I ended up picking a pack of each flavour. Gingy-lemon Who knew a mixture of ginger and lemon could taste so good!? The lemon zest and the tingly ginger would leave you wanting more😍 Guava I can take this particular flavour all day. I think i...

Night Life Awards 2019: The Yum, The Bland and The Bleh

Image
Yesterday was the first edition of the Nightlife Awards and I just knew I had to be there. In a country where the youth are often referred to as lazy, I think its important to support one another and prove time and time again that we are innovative, dogged, ambitious and will do all we can to positively put this country on the world map. Last night was filled with glitz and glam and here are my thoughts. The Yum😍🥳 The venue was dope! The decorator did an amazing job and the entire setup was nothing short of the word "lit"! The DJ should be overpaid. That guy did a fantastic job abeg! McLively lived up to his name. His bubbly personality is contagious and he kept the tempo high all night. He and Moet had such an incredible chemistry! Bollylomo is such a vibe!! He lit up the whole place when it looked things were dragging. I like how the organisers paid attention to the body language of their audience Though it came really late, the small chops was amazeballs. ...

Shopping Tidings for the Season

I was a weird child. I was mistaken for a quiet one, but if I voiced out many of the weird stuff that crossed my mind as a child, I'm certain my folks would have abandoned me in Church for some sort of permanent deliverance. One of such weird thoughts that came to me was "Why exactly do people wait till December before shopping for Christmas?" I think I actually voiced it out once and the response my aunt gave me was "finer designs of whatever you intend to buy are always available in December". I have meticulously paid attention to this for the past 20 years and I have reached a conclusion. Aunty Toyin lied. I have however noticed that whatever last minute shopping you engage in would land you nothing but an "aṣọ ẹbí" kinda stuff. You would eventually purchase a "uniform" and if luck is on your side, it won't be the imitation of the original uniform. In no particular order, I think every and anyone should put these in consideration...

#IBSMF2019 - The Yum, The Bland and The Bleh

Image
If you've been on my timeline on any of the social media platforms I belong to, by now you should be used to the fact that I occasionally deliver messages that no one sent me. This is yet another one of such instances. Last weekend, the Ìbàdàn Social Media Festival team hosted its third edition of the festival at PentonRise Events Centre and yours truly was there just to share my thoughts about how it went. Let's get right to it. The Yum 😍 I need to commend the team on how time conscious they were. Contrary to the African Time mentality, the event started early on both days. The masterclass facilitators, panelists and moderators were top notch. They were as real and relatable as possible and it kind of reminded me of @awatiibadan's Rendezvous. The sessions were explosive and there were lots of takeaways. The ones that resonate with me are : Acquire more skills and knowledge, be resourceful, improve your brand, be consistent and have faith in your God. Though le...

HOW DO YOU GRIEVE?

Image
Sometimes, life hits us with the most unexpected, unprecedented and totally unassumable. 14th March made it, 18 years since my favourite uncle passed away. I suffered chronic insomnia for 13 good years. One of those nights in final year I was up. My ears were plugged and at some point Diddy and Faith Evans' "I'd be missing you" started to play. For some reason I still cannot explain, I put it on repeat and after listening to it the fourth time, I burst out in tears. Uncontrollable, inconsolable tears. I picked a pen and wrote a piece for my uncle. I simply blurted out thirteen year old feelings and I kid you not, for the first time since  was a child, I had a sound night rest. Then the healing began. Fast forward 2017, I lost a very dear friend. We sat together in Church on Sunday and by Monday, Brother Emmanuel was gone. I was devastated. I did not blink for a whole week. By the end of the following week, I put my feelings into writing and that night, I was able t...
